Every now and again, as a writer, I come across a book that is so simple, yet powerful, in its concept, that I consider it to be genius. It’s those ‘why didn’t I think of that?!’ ideas that seem so obvious in retrospect. Vampirates by Justin Somper is one of those concepts (brilliant, yet incredible that no-one came up with it before) – and the latest is the twin series of Hero.com and Villian.net from fellow Liverpool author, Andy Briggs.
I won’t spoil the books by giving away the concept – just know that the idea behind the series is magnificent, and – I expect like many children’s authors – I’m kicking myself that I didn’t come up with it!
Of course, a great concept has to be backed up with a great book – and Andy Briggs delivers on all fronts: a group of friends thrown into dangerous situations, learning to deal with new powers and abilities, a personal tragedy in the making for two of them and a bad guy so wonderfully eccentric that you can’t wait for his next appearance!
Having now read the first in the Hero.com series, I’ll be picking up the first Villian.net book as soon as I can. I suggest you do the same.
