Not Reading?

Monday, August 18th, 2008

I’ve received a couple of emails from people asking why I’ve stopped reviewing the books I read.  The answer is that I haven’t stopped - I’ve just been reviewing them somewhere else…
The magazine, Junior Education Plus asked me to review ten spooky kids books for their October issue, and I’ve been reading little else for [...]

Fairies, Fiends & Flatulence

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Arran and I have just got back from seeing Artemis Fowl author, Eoin Colfer’s one man show - Fairies, Fiends & Flatulence.  It was a fantastic performance with Eoin talking about his childhood in Wexford, Ireland and - in particuar - dealing with his four brothers.
He explained where the inspiration came from for the characters [...]

Look at what those crazy Germans have done to the first two books I wrote in the Too Ghoul For School series…

I really like these covers!

I’m delighted to announce that one of the books I wrote for Egmont’s Too Ghoul For School series - Terror In Cubicle Four - came in second place at this year’s Gateshead Children’s Book Award.
In first place was Jeremy Strong with Beware: Killer Tomatoes, and I just beat Derek Landy into third place with his [...]

Holding Out For A Hero

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Every now and again, as a writer, I come across a book that is so simple, yet powerful, in its concept, that I consider it to be genius.  It’s those ‘why didn’t I think of that?!’ ideas that seem so obvious in retrospect.  Vampirates by Justin Somper is one of those concepts (brilliant, yet incredible [...]

Get It Bad For Vlad…

Friday, June 27th, 2008

If you’re looking for something to read while you wait for Scream Street to appear (still three months to go, I’m afraid!), you could do a lot worse than picking up one of the Vladimir Tod series from scribe(ess) of darkness, Heather Brewer.
Starting with Eighth Grade Bites, the series charts Vladimir’s tortured journey through school; [...]

Long Live The King

Friday, June 6th, 2008

I recently read Lisey’s Story by Stephen King, although I wasn’t sure whether I would enjoy what amounts to a romance from the master of horror. I needn’t have worried. Of the couple in the story one half - a writer (aren’t they always?) called Scott Landon - is already dead when the [...]
